continental : They prefer locations where they can receive direct sunlight for at least few hours.
These plants do not tolerate temperatures below zero, therefore in winter they are grown in the apartment or in the hothouse.

alpine : It is advisable to place these plants in a very bright location, exposed to direct sunlight.
These plants do not tolerate frosts, not even slight ones; it is advisable to grow them in a sheltered place or in the greenhouse.

We suggest to avoid to expose these plants to winter cold; we can place them in the greenhouse or in a sheltered location, or cover the aerial part with frost cloth.

Fertilization Begonia grandis : Houseplants are exposed all year long to a climate favourable for their growth, therefore they do not have an actual rest period, even though the poor insolation in autumn and winter slow their growth. Try to give a liquid fertilizer all year long, dissolved in normal waterings. Increasing the supply of fertilizer in spring, decreasing it during the rest of the year. It is possible to mix with the topsoil in the pot some slow-release granular fertilizer, in two supplies, one at the end of winter and the other one at the end of summer.

Watering Begonia grandis

continental : It is advisable to water regularly, specially during the hottest months of the year, avoiding to leave the soil dry for very long periods; the Begonia grandis like slightly humid substrates all year long. In autumn and winter you can avoid watering, or intervene during warmest days only.

alpine : Try to keep a mostly humid soil, remember to water generously specially in summer; we can avoid watering during the cold season, or decrease waterings, intervening only in case of long duration drought.

mediterranean : Water the Begonia grandis rather regularly from March to October, always allowing the soil to dry out well between two waterings. Avoid water excesses or stagnating water; during the cold season waterings can be decreased or suspended.

Treatments Begonia grandis : When spring starts we can apply a sulphur fungicide treatment; the other treatments will be applied only in case the parasites are on the plants. Avoid the use of any treatments on the plants during bloom, which can injure the bees.
