Camellia japonica

continental : Place the Camellia japonica in a semishady place, with few hours a day of direct sunlight.
Normally these are very rustic plants, therefore can be grown in the garden all year long.

alpine : These plants do not like to be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods.
The Camellia japonica are rustic plants, they can tolerate without any problem also intense frosts; during particularly rigid winters cover the aerial part with frost cloth.

mediterranean : These plants prefer semishady locations, but can be exposed for few hours to direct sunlight without any problem, above all during the coldest periods of the year.
They are very rustic plants, that do not suffer from cold.

Fertilization Camellia japonica : At the end of winter bury an organic fertilizer at the base of the plant, or a slow-release granular fertilizer, we can intervene again at the end of summer. Acidophil plants may need 2-3 supplies of greening fertilizer during the year, every 3-4 months.

continental : Remember to water the Camellia japonica only when the soil is dry. During waterings try to dampen deeply the substrate, avoiding to drench it excessively.

alpine : The Camellia japonica prefer fresh but not soaked soils, therefore water only when the soil has been dry for few days; providing more frequent waterings in summer and avoid to give water in winter or during the coldest periods of the year.

mediterranean : The Camellia japonica needs very regular and generous waterings; give a good amount of water every week from March to October, but remember to allow the soil to dry out between two waterings. During very cold months or particularly rainy periods we can avoid watering.

Treatments Camellia japonica : When spring starts apply a copper and sulphur treatment to avoid the growth of fungal diseases; in summer it can be necessary to use pesticide treatments, specially for the presence of aphids. Check the foliage colour all year long: if it becomes particularly yellowish give it iron chelate products against the ferric chlorosis.
