Cryptomeria japonica - Japanese cedar

continental : Place the Cryptomeria japonica in a semishady place, with few hours a day of direct sunlight.
Normally these are very rustic plants, therefore can be grown in the garden all year long.

alpine : These plants do not like to be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods.
The Cryptomeria japonica are rustic plants, they can tolerate without any problem also intense frosts; during particularly rigid winters cover the aerial part with frost cloth.

mediterranean : These plants prefer semishady locations, but can be exposed for few hours to direct sunlight without any problem, above all during the coldest periods of the year.
They are very rustic plants, that do not suffer from cold.

Fertilization Cryptomeria japonica : Usually trees do not need any fertilizer, since their roots are very extended in the soil and therefore they can move to search mineral salts necessary to the plant. Young trees shall be buried after having mixed a ripe organic fertilizer with the soil, or after having added a slow-release granular fertilizer. It can be necessary, during the years, to give some fertilizings, to be given by burying the selected fertilizer at the base of the plant at the end of winter.

continental : Remember to water the Cryptomeria japonica only when the soil is dry. During waterings try to dampen deeply the substrate, avoiding to drench it excessively.

alpine : The Cryptomeria japonica prefer fresh but not soaked soils, therefore water only when the soil has been dry for few days; providing more frequent waterings in summer and avoid to give water in winter or during the coldest periods of the year.

mediterranean : The Cryptomeria japonica needs very regular and generous waterings; give a good amount of water every week from March to October, but remember to allow the soil to dry out between two waterings. During very cold months or particularly rainy periods we can avoid watering.

Treatments Cryptomeria japonica : Normally we intervene in case parasites are on the plant; in any case a precautionary treatment against fungal diseases in spring can be useful, applying Bordeaux mixture on the buds before they grow too much.
